Mobile 2.0 – YABW

YABW – Yet Another Buzz word 🙂

By now you most who keep themselves tuned to the technology would  have heard of the trends in web & web 2.0 , another thing that I am trying  keep up with quite very actively is stuff that is going in the mobile space.  In that context I found this post pretty interesting –  Mobile 2.0

Btw has anyone noticed that of late  more than 50% of  posts in contentsutra in last few weeks is about mobile companies/deals happening in India.

Writeboard

Writely on Rails => Writeboard. Another neat stuff by gang including DHH from 37signals.

Holy @#! , MS vs Raymond

MS makes Eric Raymond (one of the last of true hacker & the father of open source) a job offer !! Read Raymond’s reply to it, it is too good 🙂
The news made me literally jump out of my seat.I was like “What the @#!*” ? This is a news bigger than than the Skype-eBay, Oracle-Siebel or Palm – Access Inc deals buzzing in the technology world today 🙂
MS is trying its old stupid tactic of dealing with competition. First ignore them, if that does not work then try to shut them by buying them out. Unfortunately for MS this is not going to work. Seriously open source is the greatest threat to MS which will lead to its doom. Why do I think so , because of late open source (a.ka. peer production) is being seen as serious contender of dominant design for modes of production (not just digital) for 21st century.

Ekype sBay

Since yesterday afternoon the blogosphere is buzzing heavily with skype – ebay deal. Thousands of blogs/thoughts are pouring out their thoughts on this one. Here is my post which is

the limit of the eBay network has been reached & now they need a technology solution that is custom tailored to the performance-based marketing niche–one that allows merchants to pay for callsOm Malik
There are two conveniently located stones under which to look: transaction revenue, and the freefone number businessMartin
This is great news for those in the Media/Web 2.0 space – valuations just got seriously amplified (and validated again) by the marketUmair

India’s Invisible dollar economy

Read this article with the same title at Indiatimes, it was an eye – opener of the current state of services and it made me ponder over the long term implication to the satyam, TCS, Infy, Wipro’s of our nation. Internet which made the possible the creation of huge IT services industry (by reducing the huge transaction costs in transporting work to cheap labour nation companies) is going to act as major headache to these companies ( by further more reduction of the same transaction costs)

Social coordination machines

Check out this nifty service called Mumbai carpooling project. I think this is a brilliant idea. It might have not made use of the buzzing web 2.0 technologies ( like Ajax, Ruby on Rails or such framework) so may not conform to definitions of wikipedia’s web 2.0 definition, but I think it is beyond web 2.0 🙂 [ Btw of late have been pondering if wikipedia’s definition capture the essence of web 2.0]

Carpooling project is a very good example of social coordination machines.
But I think it is not without its problem but they can be ironed out as this evolves and scales. There are currently no mechanism to stop adverse selection happening out here. Incentives to stop misuse has to be added. One way to fix this I think is by adding a real world connection to the users getting this service. I ‘ll detail it .
While registeration phone number should be asked for as mandatory field. An SMS should be sent to the user with a code which should entered back into the website to complete the registration process. The phone number will be only for authentication purpose and should be maintained as sanctum data otherwise users would lose trust. This way bad apples can be checked out of the system as they realize that they can taken to task if they create a rucus.( As their real world can be tracked down easily if need be)
While I saw this I got reminded of an article that I read about an year ago[ finding roommates that match simillar preferences] . That led me that such coordination machines can be built to solve various such coordination problem. Carpooling is definitely one of them and I am very glad it is in implementation. There is one subtle but significant difference between these two, the former is coordination of preference and the later is that of action and there is more value in the later. I can bet that this will turn into a big killerapp because it embraces a fundamental web ( or technology in general) axiom of killer apps. “They are good at connecting people” [ ebay , craiglist anyone]
While I read this I checked out if anyone is coordinating such an effort for bangalore [It desperately needs one] but instead came across this free map [Kiran Joganaladda, a well known blogger in Indian blogosphere] building activity going on. This again is absolutely kewl and I going to track this one actively too 🙂

Dating 2.0

Consumating – This can be defintely called Dating 2.0 , it fits in the definition of web 2.0. Tagging & ranking a person’s profile. It is very cool check it out.

verticalized job search engine for India

Came across this site called bixee a la simplyhired.com. Highly interesting, I am going to closely track their progress.

I see a huge scope for taking up cool/viable interesting concepts of web 2.0 elsewhere & apply it to Indian markets. Ofcourse one has to understand the dynamics of indian markets & culturally contextualize these applications. Just to quote an example the founder of shaadi.com Anupam Mittal got inspired by the idea of dating.com and created a match making site for indian not for dating but for coordinating marriage proposals. He knew that dating site would be meaningless for an indian context and thus created shaadi.com which is now the largest social software network.

Personal MBA

Personal MBA is the exactly the thought I had in mind some time ago when I first understood the concept of peer production while reading this . The thought came out more from a need of such a forum for me. I am thrilled to see a it in implementation right now. Peer production at work here, slowly but surely it will compete well with traditional firm of an MBA school 🙂

He is a riskmaster

Some RAOB (Random Act of Browsing) led me to this talk by Tim Draper of Draper Fisher Jurvetson in Standford , I am not sure whether it is a recent one but it is just excellent.
In the talk Tim sings a song called “He is the riskmaster”, it starts something like “Invested all his Mattress money”. It is a cool song with great guitar chords, the lyrics was written by Tim himself.
Tim had attended an event with a very unique auction prize: in which Scott Crago of The Eagles would produce a song using auctionee’s original lyrics. Tim won the auction and wrote “The Riskmaster.” In the talk he also mentioned that when you call DFJ office and you are put on hold, this is the song you hear.
I have never seen a VC like this who sings a song, plays guitar in the air. One thing really admirable was the energy that he displayed.
Surely he meant it when he said “he is a riskmaster” helping people changes the world.
