Rashmi has an article in which she has good stuff to say about IIIT, she largely quotes alumnus Chandan in the article but nonetheless good things are mentioned by her about IIIT.

Honda award

Prof Raj Reddy who is the only Indian Turing award winner is going to be awarded the Honda prize. It is indeed a great moment for Indians and especially to my alma mater. He is the chairman of the board.

Addition to blogroll

Here is another blog from that gets added to my blog roll bandwagon. Nishkala was my classmate at college & is a colleague now.An avid follower of the Indian stock market, expect to see tips & reviews on the Indian stock market here. I just hope that feeds from this one keep gets updated regularlly so that after few days I don’t have to remove this from my blog roll 🙂 [ Blogroll is sticky no doubt but I remove mine periodically and remove those which are’nt active for long time]

Disciple Gnucius

While I was still at college, Stallman(popularly known as RMS) visited us and gave us the ultimate gyaan on what freedom means, the foundataions of (free software & GPL), many of us were inspired and awed by what he said, but some like me later shifted to milder or the less stringent group of what raymond propogates (open source) and many forgot it all. But one person whom I know who really believes it and sticks to it and took it as his job to champion the cause of free software is my room mate in college. [RMS you have managed to convince at least one person that I know to adopt the true rigour that you advocate]
Recently I met him during my recent hyderabad trip and he is been doing some excellent work in evangelizing free software. He is been touring dozen of schools all around AP promoting the idea of Free software. Great work roomie & Keep it up.!! Now with the long hair you grown you have started resembling the saint gnucius 🙂
While in college he was the darling of many, friends, faculty etc, very soft spoken & humble guy and the best technical brain that one can find, trully a rare breed. Everyone wanted to be a friend or know him:) I always say that he is a person with the highest IQ that I have ever met in the college. Now with him evangelizing the idea of open source & free software with such great PASSION I see that he will go far in popularizing it in AP to beginwith.
Roomie I just wish / hope & urge that you embrace many more medium (like blog) to spread your thoughts.
PS: It is ok with me if you don’t answer my calls or emails because I know you are busy working on the evangelizing free software 🙂

Brand called IIIT

“Brand” is a very very powerful concept, it deals the power of influence . I have seen couple of people loathe the idea of brand for the unnecessary floss it creates but nonetheless I love the concept of brands very much. Recently had been thinking quite a lot about the brand value/image of IIIT right now. IIIT has to go a very long way before it achieves a worldwide known brand status. I believe that my college IIIT-H should very actively pursue building of the brand of the Institute , if it wants achieve the vision of being the premier Computer Science Institute of the country, better than even all the other IIT’s. Now according to me there are long term and short term activities that needs to be happen to build a great brand. The long term part would be to develop world class, innovative and societally relevant technologies and roll it out to the world. Work in the area of Natural Language Processing, Speech Processing in Indian Languages, ICT in education are some efforts already taken in this direction. But the long term part would add value only in another 20-50 years or so. In the short term the Institute should foster more relationship with Industry.Industry offered courses and internship for the 2nd and 3rd year students needs to be encouraged . Big time effort to get big MNC’s involved in the campus recruitment should be made. The short term part adds in immediate value towards building of the brand. This realization in my fouth year of college made me want to nominate myself for the post of Seceratry of the “Placements and PR committee”. I was elected the seceratry and I focussed more of my energy towards this role as compared to research work which was my focus in the 3rd year. I am very glad right now with the kind of placements that is going in my college for the batch of Mrs Padmaja Kanda. Oops !!Should I not be saying Brand Manager.
